Search For Parkinson's Genes Turns To Online Social Networking ...

There's a growing interest in what our genes say about our health. And in recent years, quite a few companies have sprung up to help us listen with the help of personalized DNA tests.

For a few hundred dollars and a vial of spit, these companies will search your DNA for sequences that predict your physical traits, your response to certain drugs and your risk for any number of diseases.

One such company, California-based 23andMe, is attempting to use the data to do something different: search for new genes linked to Parkinson's disease. The company, which calls itself the world's first genetics-based social network, has collected more than 125,000 DNA samples from customers.

Most customers likely wanted to find out more about their personal genetic risks ? not to contribute to medical science. But in 2009, the company decided to do genetic research, and it invited anyone diagnosed with Parkinson's disease to donate their DNA sample.

23andMe recruited people online using social media, and at Parkinson's research conferences. In exchange for participating, they're offered the company's personalized genetics services free. Participants provided a DNA sample and answered questions about their diagnosis, symptoms and lifestyle habits in online surveys.

"They may in theory be able to involve 10,000 people with Parkinson's disease, and do it cheaply and easily," explains Hank Greely, a Stanford Law School professor who follows genetics companies. "Now that's something that academic researchers would love to be able to do."

In the past, researchers looked at families with many members who had the disease, allowing them to zero in on single genes that would dramatically increase a person's risk of getting Parkinson's. But of the million or so people in the U.S. with Parkinson's disease, less than 10 percent have any of the genes discovered so far.

Researchers think that's because there are many genes involved in Parkinson's ? but that their effects are too small to be seen in just a few hundred to a few thousand people. Emily Drabant, research director at 23andMe, hopes that by looking at many thousands of people, they may be able to find them.

"We know that there are many genes, so the idea is when you aggregate across many thousands of people you can start to see genes that have perhaps a small effect on risk for Parkinson's," she says. "Perhaps, you have three or four risk variants and the combination increases your risk for Parkinson's quite significantly."

But observers like Greely say a dose of skepticism is in order. He wonders if 23andMe's customers will truly be representative of the population, and if the subjects can be trusted to accurately report their diagnosis and symptoms.

Criticism of direct-to-consumer genetics companies is nothing new. Many have questioned the ethics of delivering genetic information directly to the consumer, as well as the value and the accuracy of the genetic risks they report.

23andMe is now seeking FDA approval for its genetic testing kits. The company submitted applications for seven health-related tests so far and plans to include more than 100 more in the coming months.

When it comes to research, many also wonder if these companies will have incentives to report positive findings too soon. But Robert Green of Harvard Medical School says that companies with large profit incentives have been doing medical research for years, and while skepticism is in order, the controversial nature of these companies is not a reason to entirely discredit their approach to research.

"You know social media has changed the rest of our lives ? there's no reason why social media and the Internet can't revolutionize some aspects of medical research as well," he says. "I see this as part of a larger trend, not something that's really restricted to genetic testing companies."

23andMe has had considerable success. Though short of its goal, the company has discovered two new genes. Drabant says they have also been able to uncover rare combinations of mutated genes associated with Parkinson's that no one had found before.

Drabant says she recognizes an Internet-based approach to genetics research makes many scientists uncomfortable. It's something new. But she also says she believes companies like 23andMe have the power to make important genetic discoveries faster, and cheaper than has been done in the past. Given enough time and research subjects, she hopes to prove it.

Passion for mini-golf leads to longtime family business

For nearly 35 years, miniature golf has been big business for Steve Hittle.

Hittle was a Wasson High School biology teacher in Colorado Springs during the late 1970s when he fulfilled a childhood dream by opening a miniature golf course. He loved playing miniature golf growing up in Sioux City, Iowa; as a kid, he used old tires, metal pipes, wooden boards and plywood to make a golf course on a lot next to his home.

Now 64, Hittle and his wife, four children and sister preside over a miniature golf empire of sorts ? Hitt?s Miniature Golf along Academy Boulevard and Adventure Miniature Golf & Batting Cages just west of Interstate 25. In March, they plan to open their newest complex ? Legends Miniature Golf & Batting Cages along busy Powers Boulevard.

Adventure has six batting cages and Legends will have eight, but it?s miniature golf that?s the backbone of the business. Legends, like the other two complexes, will have three 18-hole golf courses, with classic miniature golf obstacles such as spaceships, castles, water hazards and windmills.

?It?s something they can do at all ages,? Hittle said of miniature golf?s popularity. ?You can be just a little kid or all the way up into your 90s. And it?s a great family activity. Families can come here and there?s no distractions. They can just enjoy each other, they can recreate and play golf.?

The activity also attracts couples, religious groups, birthday parties and service clubs, while tourists enjoy miniature golf in the evening after visiting other attractions during the day, he said.

Even in an age of 3-D movies, laser tag and video games, Hittle said, he?s found that miniature golf holds its own against the newer and flashier rivals.

?Sometimes,? Hittle said, ?people just like a break from the high tech. This is just low tech. I mean, miniature golf is the same now as it was 100 years ago.?

As successful as the business has been, however, launching it was no gimme putt for Hittle.
He graduated from Iowa State University in 1970 with a bachelor?s degree in biology and physical education; he received a master?s degree in physiology from Colorado State University in 1971, and moved to Colorado Springs later that year. He got his first teaching job at East Junior High before he moved to Wasson.

When Hittle decided to pursue his dream of opening a miniature golf complex, he spent most of his life?s savings, mortgaged his home and took out a commercial loan to buy land; his parents, meanwhile, mortgaged their home to provide additional financial help.

It was a risk he sweated through, Hittle admitted, although he wasn?t married at the time and didn?t have a family to worry about.

In 1978, Hittle opened Hitt?s, southwest of Academy and Austin Bluffs Parkway. There were other miniature golf complexes at the time, one near Academy and Galley Road and another in Manitou Springs. Hitt?s had growing pains at first, but gained a following.

Hittle kept on teaching until 1985, operating Hitt?s while working.

?That was pretty much my life,? he said.

The business did well enough that Hittle expanded. He opened Putter?s Park, another 54-hole complex with batting cages, in 1986 near South Academy Boulevard and Bradley Road.
Putter?s Park did OK, but not as well as Hitt?s, he said. When Hittle had the chance to sell the land, he did. The site is now a veterinarian clinic.

After the real estate collapse of the late 1980s, Hittle followed the lead of a few local real estate developers: He took advantage of depressed land prices and bought property along I-25, southwest of Woodmen Road, where he opened Adventure in 1993.

With good access and visibility, the complex succeeded in attracting a loyal following. Hittle has had chances to sell the land to hotels, but he?s said no.

Along the way, his kids, who also grew up playing miniature golf, became involved in the business. Cary, 27, paints obstacles and makes welding repairs; Tara, 26, a teacher and head volleyball coach at Doherty High School, works as a manager and helps customers; Keith, 25, has done landscaping work; and, Nathan, a 16-year-old Palmer High School sophomore, has helped with trash and maintenance.

Hittle?s wife, Linda, has a financial background; when she?s not taking care of customers, she?s doing payroll, bookkeeping and other office work. Sandy, Hittle?s sister, is a retired school teacher who helps run the Adventure complex. By the time he opens Legends, Hittle will employ 30 to 35 part-time workers, many of whom are students.

Legends will open northwest of Powers and Dublin boulevards; Hittle had eyed the Powers corridor for several years, which is a short drive from tens of thousands of homes in Stetson Hills, Briargate, Nor?wood and other neighborhoods that sprang up over the last 20 years on the north and northeast sides.

Among other businesses, Dion?s, a New Mexico-based pizza chain, is coming to the intersection; apartments are envisioned across the street; and American Furniture Warehouse plans a new store just to the north that?s expected to be a draw for the area.

Legends will be similar to Hittle?s other complexes, where each golf course has a theme. At Adventure, for example, ?Around the World,? ?Old West? and ?Journey thru Time? challenge players with obstacles such as a castle, the Eiffel Tower, a western town, an E.T.-like alien ship and a dinosaur. Hittle conceives and builds the obstacles himself and designs the layout of the courses, although he buys buffaloes, hippos, elephants and other animals from old amusement parks around the country.

Legends also will have an 1,800-square-foot covered concession area, slightly larger than one at Adventure, where snack items will be sold.

But like the other complexes, Legends won?t have video or arcade games. The games are money makers, Hittle said, but he prefers to stick to golf and batting cages.

?A lot of families really appreciate that,? he said. ?They come out here and they know it?s just miniature golf. They don?t have to worry about their kids wanting to come and play more games, more this, more that.

?It?s a happy business,? he added. ?Sometimes you go to a store or something, people are grumpy because (prices) are too high. Most people come here to have a good time.?

Like Rachel McFerron and her 6-year-old daughter, Kirstyn, who were enjoying the Adventure complex recently on a sunny weekday morning.

?I like it because I don?t get to do the real golf,? Kirstyn said. ?This one?s for kids and adults. It?s a lot of fun.?

Added Rachel: ?It?s something to do outside with the kids.?

Or, parents sometimes go it alone. Scott and Theresa Frakes left their two young sons at home recently while they enjoyed the Adventure complex.

?At a movie, you just sit there,? Theresa said. But being outdoors, she joked as she competed for bragging rights with her husband, ?you can talk a bit, you can talk a little trash talk.?

The complexes are open roughly March through October, but will open during the winter if there?s a stretch of nice weather. The down time allows a chance for Hittle and his family to paint and make repairs.

The business hasn?t been problem free. Hitt?s was barely hanging on several years ago in the face of competition from other miniature golf courses, Hittle said.

He began wooing customers with a 25th anniversary special ? dropping prices to $1.75 for 18 holes, just a quarter more than when Hitt?s opened in 1978. The price cut worked, and Hittle now has made Hitt?s the discount complex, charging an even $2. Adults will pay $5 for 18 holes at Legends, the same price as Adventure.

As with Hitt?s and Adventure, Hittle?s family will have roles in overseeing Legends. Eventually, Hittle said he envisions Tara and Keith running Legends, while Cary takes over Hitt?s and Hittle and his wife operate Adventure.

Hittle plans to retire at some point, but probably not for another seven to 10 years ? he says he enjoys the business too much.

?You don?t have to be a great athlete to play it,? Hittle said of miniature golf. ?All you have to do is want to have some fun. And we all need that these days.?

Samsung?s Alleged New Galaxy Player YP-GP1 Revealed, Packs ICS, 5.8-inch Display

YP-GP11

Wow, this might be Samsung?s next Galaxy Player, at least according to a rumor, but it has a screen that?s large enough to be the company?s next tablet, too. The device looks really similar to a Galaxy S III, save for the obvious 3G/4G connectivity and the clear focus on media consumption.

In any case, it apparently sports a huge 5.8-inch display (the Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch screen, by comparison), with a 960 x 540-pixel resolution, a 3-megapixel camera, a VGA-front facing camera, 1GB of RAM, Android 4.0 Ice Cream?Sandwich, a large 2,500mAh battery, a microSD card slot and an FM radio. Sounds pretty stacked, but we kind of wish that Samsung would add in S Pen functionality and turn this into a smaller Galaxy Note?tablet.

There?s a strong possibility the new Galaxy Player, which goes by the moniker YP-GP1, according to SamMobile, will be unveiled during IFA at the end of the month. TechnoBuffalo will be storming the show floor daily bringing you news, photos and video, so stay tuned for more!

Brad Pitt's pre-wedding binge

Los Angeles - Brad Pitt may have some last-minute explaining to do to soon-to-be bride Angelina Jolie.

The actor reportedly got himself into trouble with his partner after going on a pre-wedding drinking binge with Guy Ritchie, 43, at his London pub, The Punchbowl.?

Apparently Brad, 48, staggered home drunk to his rented mansion in Richmond at 06:00.

Sources told the Daily Star newspaper: ''Brad spent the evening boozing with Guy and other pals in Guy's pub.

''Ange was shocked he came home in such a state, especially as he hadn't called her. She said she hadn't seen him like that in years. Brad blamed it all on British beer.''

The star got a bit too relaxed as he tried out various types of the alcoholic drink.

The insider continued: ''The group spent the night in the back room of the pub drinking real ales such as Bombardier and Spitfire.

''Brad sampled a few different beers and things got a bit rowdy. It was a rare chance for him to let his hair down.''

The couple are expected to tie the knot soon at their 17th Century ?35m Chateau Miraval in the south of France.

New research published in Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience

Amsterdam, NL, August 15, 2012 In a study published in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience scientists report that a therapy combining exercise with the neurovascular protective agent S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) improved recovery from stroke in a rat model. GSNO is a compound found naturally in the body and it has no known side effects or toxicity.

"In our study, GSNO or motor exercise provided neuroprotection, reduced neuronal cell death, maintained tissue structure, and aided functional recovery by stimulating the expression of neuronal repair mediators," says lead investigator Avtar K. Singh, MD, of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Charleston. "GSNO in combination with exercise accelerated the rate and enhanced the degree of recovery."

Stroke is both an acute disease and a chronic condition. While the acute phase is associated with cell death and secondary injury, the chronic phase is characterized by insufficient neurorepair mechanisms. Most monotherapies fail because the drugs are not effective in the chronic phase. Rehabilitation has been used to improve neurofunction in the chronic phase, but its efficacy is slow and limited. An ideal therapy would ameliorate the injury in both phases and therefore include a combination of rehabilitation and an agent that provides both neuroprotection and repair, such as GSNO.

Dr. Singh and her colleagues from MUSC (Drs. Mushfiquddin Khan, Harutoshi Sakakima and Inderjit Singh) induced stroke in rats, which were then assigned to one of five treatment groups. The first group received no treatment; the second group was treated with exercise; the third group with GSNO; the fourth group received both exercise and GSNO treatment; and the fifth group received a sham treatment. In the exercise treatment, rats were required to run on a rotating rod motor unit at a constant speed for 20 minutes a day. GSNO was administered throughout the treatment period.

Animals in each group were evaluated for neurological function, motor behavior, and locomotor function before and after the procedure. The size of the infarct was measured. At 7 and 14 days after stroke was induced, brain tissue samples were removed and tested.

Administration of GSNO not only reduced brain injury but also improved neurological scores. Exercise alone could not significantly reduce infarct volume, because the exercise started 72 hours post procedure and infarctions occur before then. However, exercise did improve neurobehavioral functions. Combining the therapies had a synergistic effect, and provided greater functional improvement than either GSNO or exercise alone.

Analysis of the brain tissue found that GSNO accelerates the recovery of neurological and motor functions and enhances the benefit of exercise by stimulating the expression of neurotrophic factor BDNF and its receptors, which play critical roles in neurorepair processes, and by activating Akt, a protein involved in cell proliferation. Dr. Singh and her collaborators Drs. Mushfiquddin Khan and Inderjit Singh conclude, "GSNO is an attractive candidate to be investigated in humans for neurorepair and rehabilitation following stroke."

Making $11,000 a year, but excluded from Medicaid

MIAMI (AP) ? Sandra Pico is poor, but not poor enough.

She makes about $15,000 a year, supporting her daughter and unemployed husband. She thought she'd be able to get health insurance after the Supreme Court upheld President Barack Obama's health care law.

Then she heard that her own governor won't agree to the federal plan to extend Medicaid coverage to people like her in two years. So she expects to remain uninsured, struggling to pay for her blood pressure medicine.

"You fall through the cracks and there's nothing you can do about it," said the 52-year-old home health aide. "It makes me feel like garbage, like the American dream, my dream in my homeland is not being accomplished."

Many working parents like Pico are below the federal poverty line but don't qualify for Medicaid, a decades-old state-federal insurance program. That's especially true in states where conservative governors say they'll reject the Medicaid expansion under Obama's health law.

In South Carolina, a yearly income of $16,900 is too much for Medicaid for a family of three. In Florida, $11,000 a year is too much. In Mississippi, $8,200 a year is too much. In Louisiana and Texas, earning more than just $5,000 a year makes you ineligible for Medicaid.

Governors in those five states have said they'll reject the Medicaid expansion underpinning Obama's health law after the Supreme Court's decision gave states that option. They favor small government and say they can't afford the added cost to their states even if it's delayed by several years. Some states estimate the expansion could ultimately cost them a billion dollars a year or more.

Many of the people affected by the decision are working parents who are poor ? but not poor enough ? to qualify for Medicaid.

Republican Mitt Romney's new running mate, conservative Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan, has a budget plan that would turn Medicaid over to the states and sharply limit federal dollars. Romney hasn't specifically said where he stands on Ryan's idea, but has expressed broad support for his vice presidential pick's proposals.

Medicaid now covers an estimated 70 million Americans and would cover an estimated 7 million more in 2014 under the Obama health law's expansion. In contrast, Ryan's plan could mean 14 million to 27 million Americans would ultimately lose coverage, even beyond the effect of a repeal of the health law, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation of Ryan's 2011 budget plan.

For now, most states don't cover childless adults, but all states cover some low-income parents. The income cutoff, however, varies widely from state to state.

Most states cover children in low-income families. Manuel and Sandra Pico's 15-year-old daughter is covered by Medicaid. But the suburban Miami couple can't afford private insurance for themselves and they make too much for Florida's Medicaid.

Manuel Pico, a carpenter, used to make more than $20,000 a year, but has struggled to find work in the last three years after the real estate market collapsed. He occasionally picks up day jobs or takes care of the neighbor's yard. Sandra Pico would like to work full time, but can't afford to pay someone to watch her 34-year-old sister, who has Down syndrome.

"No matter how hard I work, I'm not going to get anywhere," Sandra Pico said. "If you're not rich, you just don't have it."

In San Juan, Texas, 22-year-old Matthew Solis makes about $8,700 a year ? too much to qualify for Medicaid in that state. Solis, a single father with joint custody of his 4-year-old daughter, said he works about 25 hours per week at a building supply store making minimum wage and is a full-time college student at the University of Texas-Pan American. He aspires to be a school counselor.

He recently sought medical care for food poisoning, visiting a federally funded clinic. But he doesn't see a doctor regularly because he can't afford private insurance. The new health law allows young adults to remain on their parents' insurance until age 26. But that doesn't help Solis, whose father is uninsured and whose mother died of leukemia when he was 8.

"I voted for him (Obama) because he promised we would have insurance," Solis said. "I'm pretty upset because I worked for Obama and I still don't have coverage."

His governor, Rick Perry, like Pico's governor, Rick Scott, is rejecting the Medicaid expansion. So Solis too is out of luck unless his circumstances dramatically change.

In all but one of the states where governors are rejecting or leaning against the expansion, the income level that disqualifies a parent from Medicaid is below the federal poverty line. Only in New Jersey, where Gov. Chris Christie has said he's leaning against the expansion, is Medicaid available to parents with incomes at the poverty line and slightly above. New Jersey will cover a parent making $24,645 in a family of three.

Most states base Medicaid eligibility for parents on household income and how it compares to the federal poverty level, which was $18,530 for a family of three in 2011, the year being used for easier state-by-state comparisons.

In Louisiana, the eligibility cutoff for a working parent is 25 percent of federal poverty, or $4,633 for a family of three. In Nevada, it's 87 percent of the federal poverty level, or $16,121 for a family of three.

That's been the range in states where governors are likely saying no to expanded Medicaid.

In contrast, states where governors have said they'll expand Medicaid are more generous with working parents. The Medicaid eligibility cutoff ranges in those states from Washington's $13,527 to Minnesota's $39,840.

To be sure, some states with generous coverage for parents have been forced to cut back. Illinois, facing a financial crisis, ended coverage last month for more than 25,000 working parents. Even so, the state still covers working parents with incomes slightly higher than the poverty line.

The national health law's Medicaid expansion would start covering all citizens in 2014 who make up to roughly $15,400 for an individual, $30,650 for a family of four.

The federal government will pay the full cost of the Medicaid expansion through 2016. After that, the states will pick up 5 percent of the cost through 2019, and 10 percent of the cost thereafter.

Why would a governor say no?

These state leaders are in favor of smaller government. In principle, they don't want the federal government to expand ? even if that expansion would help their own citizens. Also Medicaid is costly, taking a huge bite out of budgets already. And they don't want to be on the hook for paying any more of the tab even if it's years down the road.

"We don't need the federal government telling us what to do when it comes to meeting the needs of the citizens of our states," Florida Gov. Rick Scott wrote recently in an opinion piece for U.S. News and World Report. "And we don't need Washington putting states on the hook for future budget obligations."

Also, many conservatives view Medicaid as a wasteful, highly flawed program, akin to no health coverage. Many doctors across the country won't treat Medicaid patients because the payments they receive are so low.

When the Supreme Court ruled that states could opt out of the health law's Medicaid expansion, it raised the chances for inequity at a time when more Americans have fallen from the middle class into poverty, said Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

"Why should a sick person in Connecticut have access to health care when they don't in Mississippi and Texas?" Sawhill asked. "We really do have a very high level of poverty as a result of the recession. And the safety net is weaker than ever."

Medicaid, the nation's single largest insurer, is a state and federal program created in 1965 as a companion program to welfare cash assistance to single parents. Today, the elderly and disabled cost nearly 70 cents of every Medicaid dollar, not the stereotypical single mother and her children.

What's largely unknown to many Americans is who is left out of the safety net, said Cheryl Camillo, a senior researcher at Mathematica Policy Research. "A huge chunk of the populace is not covered, even by Medicaid," she said.

The political rhetoric during a presidential campaign focuses on the middle class and leaves the uninsured working poor largely invisible, said Rand Corp. researcher Dr. Art Kellermann.

"We hear a lot of talk about unemployment and the aspirations of middle-class Americans. But we don't hear about the consequences of unemployment and the consequences of the collapsing middle class," Kellermann said. Losing health insurance is one of those consequences.

"It's like the public just doesn't want to believe anything else until it hits home," he said, "Until it's their own child, brother or parent that got laid off when they were 58, until then, it's not real."

Defence lawyers for former DR Congo vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba opened their case Tuesday before the International Criminal Court, where he faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

"We are starting a new phase," judge Sylvia Steiner told the court based in The Hague. She added: "Today, the defence will commence presenting its evidence in this trial."

Bemba, 49, faces three counts of war crimes and two of crimes against humanity for atrocities committed by members of his private army in the neighbouring Central African Republic between October 2002 and March 2003.

Troops of his Congolese Liberation Movement (MLC) are accused of carrying out widespread and systematic attacks against CAR civilians when he sent them into the country in late 2002 to help put down a coup against then CAR president Ange-Felix Patasse.

Lawyers for Bemba, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, argue that his forces were under Central African command when the atrocities were committed.

The first defence witness to take the stand will be retired French general Jacques Seara, a military expert who authored a report on military command structures during the conflict.

Prosecutors closed their case on March 21.

The former rebel leader-turned-politician said he deployed his troops when Patasse asked for help in quelling a rebellion led by the former armed forces chief Francois Bozize, who eventually seized power in 2003.

Bemba, who unsuccessfully challenged current DR Congo President Joseph Kabila in polls in 2006, went into exile after government forces routed his private militia in 2007. He was arrested in Brussels in 2008.

Judges have given the defence 230 hours to question the 59 witnesses it intends to call.

Today's rules allow you to defer taxes by rolling over the distribution into an IRA that you control. But you must follow the proper procedure to get this taxpayer-friendly outcome.?

Unlike in prior years, non-spousal beneficiaries can now defer income taxes from the inheritances they receive. The trick is to get it done right!

You can?t teach an old dog new tricks, but you can teach an inherited non-spousal IRA to ?rollover? correctly. In fact, if you do not handle this basic financial transaction with care, then it will cost you.

As with most tax moves, there is a wrong way and a right way.

First, the wrong way. In former times you had no choice as a ?non-spousal? inheritor of an IRA. You had to take the entire account balance as a ?lump-sum? and take the tax hit. Similarly today, the result is the same if the money reaches you before it reaches an IRA trustee.

Now, for the right way, as described in a recent article in SmartMoney titled Rolling Over Uncle Henry's 401(k). Essentially, you can let your inherited IRA spill over into a newly created IRA you establish to receive regular distributions from the inherited IRA. Note: the retirement funds you inherit cannot be accumulated tax-deferred in the newly created IRA, as under certain rules that apply to spousal IRA rollovers. In fact, you are required to make minimum withdrawals or face a 50% excise tax on the difference between what you should have withdrawn and what you actually did withdraw.

Another article in Forbes, titled IRA Rollovers - Let's Be Careful Out There, offers more assistance on the rollover process and reviews some recent court cases to illustrate the finer points of an entirely trustee-to-trustee rollover. Never let an IRA trustee of an inherited IRA write a check directly to you! Instead, instruct the trustee to talk to the new trustee of your newly created non-spousal beneficiary IRA to coordinate the transfer.

Enhance Organizational Performance with Datacenter Virtualization ...

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Martin | Tuesday, 07 August 2012 01:27 | Word Count: 538

The fast growth of global business establishments and the stiff competition prevalent in the business environment demands business continuity irrespective of the time differences across geographically distant locations. Such challenge pushes the organization to depend more on the fast paced IT environment making way for investment into technologically enhanced infrastructure. Further the growth of organization also leads to more data storage and processing and the need for establishing data centers at various locations to overcome the issue of business continuity.

However, the data centers equipped with world-class and high density IT infrastructure, networking equipments had a small life span. The technological growth of data centers led to higher power consumption, heat generation and other physical challenges for the data center service providers. Further, the spread of data centers across regions to meet the fast paced requirements of data retrieval and access, led to the use of replicated applications and data duplication. In face of all the challenges faced, leading service providers have worked out data center virtualization methods.

Further, with IT outsourcing becoming an important aspect of cost-effective product life cycle, and the arising demands for customized applications across the product life cycle has brought in the requirement of high accessibility levels of the critical business information across the global development teams. ? This also calls for the need of strong information security measures to be deployed across the data centers.

The modern day data centers are not just repositories of corporate data, but are strategic assets necessary to maintain the growth of digital data, infrastructure performance, application availability, and scalability. Data center virtualization will only help pave way for increasing the mobility and changing the application delivery methods to the users. ?By virtualizing the data center environment, organizations tend to mitigate issues such as low resource utilization and other traditional client-server environmental problems. Virtualization with its flexibility, adaptability and reduced technology requirements is a breakthrough for the networked environment.

Datacenter virtualization offered by the leading IT giants can be enumerated as a 5-phase life cycle process that starts with

? ? ? ? ? Assessment and analysis of the existing infrastructure and applications
? ? ? ? ? Bringing about architectural and operational design changes as per environmental requirements.
? ? ? ? ? Implementation and integrating of virtual infrastructure
? ? ? ? ? Facility Management and
? ? ? ? ? Transformation

Further, as organizations with organizations being concerned with their carbon footprints on the environment, IT giants have worked out eco-friendly data center virtualization models. These would help organizations save on power with 80-90% less energy consumption. Data center virtualization without any upfront investments, helps to reduce the number of hardware installed bringing the cost down in sizable forms.

Besides allowing IT managers trim budgets, data center virtualization helps organizations to increase performance by:

? ? ? ? ? increasing reliability and ensuring business continuity
? ? ? ? ? Speedy deployments and upgrades,
? ? ? ? ? reduces ?IT overhead

In other words, these solutions accelerate service delivery, improve profitability, provide system integration and reduce risk for new business developments while providing opportunities to scale up with technological innovations.

Romney, RNC raise more than $101M in July

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee say their political money-raising machine netted more than $101 million last month.

Romney's presidential campaign says in a statement issued Monday that about 26 percent of the money raised in July came in donations of less than $250 dollars.

The campaign says that Romney, the RNC and state GOP parties have nearly $186 million in cash on hand.

Romney's finance chairman, Spencer Zwick, says the Republicans are "well on track to raise the money to be successful in November."

President Barack Obama's fundraising totals for July were not yet available, but Romney brought in more cash than Obama during both May and June.

GOP-aligned "super" PACs also are raising and spending millions of dollars to defeat Obama.

Cajun Chicken Pasta ? A Recipe A Day

August 6, 2012 at 2:52 pm

I found this recipe on Skinnytaste and it is so good you won?t know you?re eating a skinny version of cajun chicken pasta.? The only thing I did differently was to use regular linguine instead of Dreamfields.? I just cannot get used to Dreamfields so I?ll stick to the regular.? I think whole wheat pasta would work, too, but whole grains bother my gout so I just stick to regular.

If you haven?t been to Skinnytaste ~ take a look!

Lighter Cajun Chicken Pasta

8 ozs uncooked linguine
1 lb chicken tenderloins
1 to 2 tsps Cajun seasoning ~ use more or less if you like
1 tbsp olive oil
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 medium tomatoes, diced
1 cup fat free, low sodium chicken broth
1/3 cup skim milk
1 tbsp flour
3 tbsps light cream cheese
fresh cracked black pepper
2 scallions, chopped
salt to taste
Cooking spray

In a small blender, mix mix milk, flour, and cream cheese and set aside. Make sure all veggies are prepped. Season chicken tenderloins with Cajun seasoning, garlic powder and salt.

Prepare pasta in salted water according to the package.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat; spray with cooking spray and add half of the chicken. Cook until no pink remains and set aside on a plate. Repeat with the other half of chicken. Set all chicken aside.

Add olive oil to the skillet and reduce to medium; add bell pepper, onion, garlic to skillet and saute for 3-4 minutes.

Add mushrooms and tomatoes and saute for 3-4 minutes or until all veggies are tender. Season with 1/ tsp salt, garlic powder, and fresh black pepper.

Reduce the heat and add the chicken broth and pour in the cream cheese,flour/milk slurry and stir for about 2 minutes.

Place the chicken back in the skillet, adjust salt and Cajun seasoning if needed.

Add the linguine and toss to coat the linguine.

Sprinkle the green onions over the top and serve.

Makes 4-6 servings.

Happy Cooking!

Web optimization or Research Motor Optimization is a phrase which is well taken by the on the web advertising and marketing fraternity but for other folks it?s a no man?s land. Even designers, builders and other employees in the organizations are typically unaware of this domain and undermine its significance which is a massive mistake. This at times qualified prospects to conflicts amongst SEOs and designers/builders. But proper now we are not likely to converse about it fairly, we will see how to offer your Seo solutions to the individuals who have in no way heard about it. I get in touch with them Web optimization challenged (no offenses!) individuals and it?s a challenge for every single Search engine marketing services offering firm to get business from them.

Usually, businesses commit a big error of misinforming their potential customers about Web optimization and projecting it in a mistaken manner thus deceptive them about the approach and its advantages. This is truly an improper technique. Corporations do so in order to promptly get the tasks as they really don?t feel about the long-phrase added benefits and in the finish they degrade their track record together with the client obtaining skeptical about Search engine optimisation.

Let?s see in detail how to offer Search engine marketing to the Seo challenged particular person:

1. Teach, teach and teach ? It is never ever effortless for any company to make new business except it has a lengthy proven profitable track report. The greatest issue is ignorance of the target prospective customers. They know what they want to do but when it will come to how to do, they need a little bit of schooling specifically when there are quacks all all-around. Start out not by telling what Search engine marketing is but very first educate your prospective customers about the rewards of Search engine optimisation and how they can witness their enterprise grow by reaching to the on-line population all more than the globe therefore earning their small business truly world wide. But make guaranteed that the prospect you are chasing has a web page for his company. If not, then you will have to initial convince him about having a single.

two. Reveal how lookup engines work ? Before you commence off with an explanation about Seo, initial make clear them about the functioning of search engines. But be extremely cautious when you do so. Recall not get way too technical with them or else they will not comprehend even a solitary point and you will finish up dropping their interest and finally shedding a small business. When you begin the conversation, do not even feel of working with the terms this sort of as lookup motor algorithms, robots, crawlers, indexing or any other this sort of phrase.

3. Make clear Search engine optimisation things ? Immediately after you have explained in detail how search engines perform, following move is to reveal lookup motor optimization (Seo), the procedure and what benefits it gives. Describe this phase in affiliation with the 1st stage therefore guaranteeing that the prospect will get a good knowing of relevant factors. Make them fully grasp Search engine marketing in the easiest achievable manner and make sure that the listener is adhering to you. Do not involve Search engine optimisation jargons in your discuss and if doable give them an explanation supported by online presentation.

four. Burst the Search engine optimisation myths ? This is the very best you can do to win the self-assurance of your prospect. Dispel mistaken notions about the Seo becoming marketed by fakes who task themselves as industry experts. Most of them marketplace their Search engine optimisation expert services beneath the banner of ?confident shot improved sales?. Make guaranteed that your prospect is not underneath this incorrect impression or else you way too will end up with a degraded popularity. The important issue is not just the training but the appropriate education mixed with the advertising communication.

5. Building blocks of Search engine optimization: Keyword phrases ? Seo Specialists are effectively mindful of the importance of keyword phrases, so why not sensitize our potential customers way too. Reveal them about the relevance of keywords and phrases ? how they are utilised to search for the internet websites by the end users and how research engines rank the internet websites on the foundation of their application. Also, clarify the benefits of keyword research process and how it sorts the backbone of optimization procedure.

6. Expose the differences in between Web optimization and Regular Advertising and marketing ? When you are making an attempt to sell your companies assume some unforeseen inquiries. The human being may possibly consult you, why ought to we avail your Seo expert services when we have other regular forms of marketing? This problem is rather rational and need to be meticulously answered in buy to retain the conversation on track. Two most distinguishing qualities of Search engine marketing that separates it from classic promoting are the total of expense and period of time of effectiveness. The expense charge incurred in regular advertising and marketing is generally also higher and it stays successful only as lengthy as the marketing campaign runs. On the opposite, investment in Seo is comparatively reduced and the results are practically everlasting.

7. Acquire an Seo primer ? Develop an elementary useful resource either in the type of eBooks, brochures, presentations, video clips or any other medium that can be utilized to educate your prospective customers and give them with the fundamental knowing and concepts of Web optimization. Making use of graphical representation alternatively of very long pieces of text is any time a better alternative. Make sure to consist of:

. Simplified overview of Search engine optimisation and its operating method. . What customers must assume if they avail your Seo companies? . Supplemental expert services you present.

Educating and then receiving an Search engine optimization venture is definitely a wearisome endeavor but it can be created easy if you recognize your target viewers. Your prospective customers may well not be aware of Seo but staying in an enterprise they are authorities of their domain. Consider to describe them in their language i.e. make your language additional consumer centric than getting enterprise centric and then you can very nicely achieve your activity.

HP Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us

product 0.3
  • Pros

Less expensive than ultrabooks. Good port selection. Metal construction.

  • Cons

Sluggish performance. Loaded with bloatware. Low-resolution display. Screen door effect on display. Fingerprint magnet

  • Bottom Line

HP has positioned its AMD-powered Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us as a lower-priced alternative to Intel-certified ultrabooks. Unfortunately, the axiom that "you get what you pay for" applies here. It's underpowered, has a mediocre screen, and may feel slow even when brand new.

If you're one of the people who disagrees that it's what's inside that counts, then the metal-bodied HP Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us ($699.99 list) should be on your radar. The Envy has a stylish metal body and looks terrific when you take it out of your commuter bag, but its mediocre screen, lagging performance, unwanted add-on software, and other factors spoil the initial glow when you bring the system home. Sure, it's a lower-priced alternative to Intel-certified ultrabooks, but unfortunately we can't even recommend it to the bargain hunter. Design and Features
The Envy 6-1010us seems like a larger version of the HP Envy 4-1043cl, with a similar metal finish and larger 15.6-inch screen (compared with the 14-inch screen on the Envy 4-1043cl). The concept of a 15-inch ultrabook or sleekbook seems like an oxymoron. A slimmer laptop is always welcome, although in years past this system likely would have been called a "thin and light" or ultraportable. It measures about 0.8 by 14.75 by 10 inches (HWD), so it meets the 21mm thickness spec for ultrabooks. It does so by eschewing the optical drive usually found on 15-inch laptops. The system weighs 4.48 pounds alone and about 5 pounds with the AC adapter. This is still quite portable; the current 15-inch entry-level desktop replacement laptop Editors' Choice Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) weighs 5.97 pounds. The Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us comes with a 15-inch screen with a 1,366-by-768 resolution. This is a lot lower resolution than say the 14-inch 1,920-by-1,080 resolution screen seen on the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-R5102F . You'll get less screen real estate on the cheaper Sleekbook, but then again you're saving $300. While the 1,366-by-768 screen was chosen to save money, that doesn't excuse the fact that you'll see a screen door effect while using the Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us. A screen door effect is similar to how it sounds: it seems like you're watching the display thought a screen door. It makes everything you see blocky and ill-defined. You can see it when there's a lot of solid color on the screen, like the green background before a movie trailer starts or on the white background of a website. You can pick out the individual pixels, and as a consequence text also looks blocky and jaggy. The effect is like trying to read the text and view characters in an 8- or 16-bit console game. We understand that building a budget laptop necessitated the use of a budget panel, but anyone with a critical eye will have a problem with this screen. Any decent-quality tablet screen will look better than the one on the Envy 6-1010us. The standard full-size chiclet-style keyboard is comfortable to type on, except for one thing: Our review unit had problems registering typed spaces if you tapped the extreme left or right of the space bar; you had to press the exact center of the space bar every time. This slowed touch typing down to a crawl. The keyboard on the HP Envy 4-1043cl and on a HP Envy Sleekbook 6z-1000 review unit didn't share this problem, so we're hoping it's a sample defect. The black aluminum lid and red soft touch magnesium base were pleasing to the touch, but both surfaces and the keyboard showed fingerprints and smudges quite easily. Typing on the keyboard frequently resulted in unwanted touchpad input, so you may want to take advantage of the "button" in the upper-left corner that disables the touchpad when you double-click it. Speaking of which, the Envy 6-1010us's touchpad bears a subtle bull's-eye pattern, which introduces slightly more drag on your fingers than a traditional smooth touchpad. The Envy 6-1010us has a good selection of ports on it. It comes with two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, a full-size Ethernet port (no dongle needed), and an HDMI port. This means you shouldn't have any problem connecting the system to an external display. The Envy 6-1010us comes with standard built-in 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. You also get 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive; although this combination seems adequate, the system's dual-core AMD A6-4455M Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) is a strike against the system. The benchmark numbers tell part of the story (more on that later), but the system may start feeling slow the first time you boot it up. Viewing 720p HD videos on a new laptop shouldn't be a problem, but critical users may detect dropped frames and some stuttering on titles that feature heavy action or were encoded with an older or less-efficient codec. We watched video trailers from the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph movie as well as other HD videos via the system's Wi-Fi connection, and portions of the videos either slowed down or lost sync with the audio. Older Web videos like the 2009 Star Trek trailer also exhibited occasional slowdown during playback. It wasn't our Internet connection; our office has at least 40Mbps of throughput. That said, most other 720p and 1080p videos we viewed played fine, and any stuttering was almost imperceptible. Because the system has a slower 5,400rpm hard drive, booting it and launching apps was noticeably slower than on newer SSD-powered ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime twins, the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-R5102F and Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 . The Envy 6-1010us isn't as bad as the single-core Atom-powered netbooks from a few years ago, but its performance is still disappointing right out of the box. A lot of bloatware comes preinstalled on the Envy 6-1010us. In addition to shortcuts to eBay, HP Games, and Office Starter 2010 on the desktop, you'll find taskbar shortcuts to helper programs, Windows Live products, and an ad for Blio (an ebook store). All of this should be organized in the Start menu (and to HP's credit, it mostly is organized into categories there). Internet Explorer had three extra toolbars: Bing, Norton Internet Security, and the HP SimplePass identity protection app. Add the fully populated bookmark bar (with ads for eBay, Amazon, and HP Games), and you're looking at 1.75 inches of a 7.75-inch (vertical) screen consumed by bookmarks and taskbars. This is one case in which having a lower-resolution screen is a huge drawback. Sure, you can hide all the toolbars and get back the screen space, but it will be a hassle trying to explain that procedure to a relative over the phone. The Envy 6-1010us comes with Beats Audio and a built-in subwoofer. The sound won't shake down the house, but the audio enhancements help when listening to music and watching movies. We'd recommend adding a pair of headphones for the best audio experience. The system comes with 60 days of Norton Internet Security updates, better than the 30 days free you would get online, but far too short to afford any real protection. The Envy 6-1010us comes with a standard one-year limited warranty and one year of technical support. Performance
HP Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us The Envy 6-1010us was slow on our benchmark tests?there's no getting around it. The system's "next-gen" AMD A6-4455M APU (Accelerated Processor Unit) is essentially AMD's answer to the Intel Core processor. Both processors include integrated graphics, which simplifies construction and helps battery life. The problem is that AMD's solution here is a lot slower than Intel's. Most basic ultrabooks, like the Editors' Choice HP Folio 13-1020us , use an Intel Core i5 processor. On our Handbrake video test, the Envy 6-1010us took 4 minutes 5 seconds, compared with the 2:29 for the HP Folio. That's not even the fastest comparable score: The Sony VAIO E15 got a 1:39 on the same test. Likewise, Photoshop CS5 numbers for the Envy 6-1010us were quite disappointing (8:05) compared with the HP Folio 13 (5:24) and the Sony VAIO E15 (3:55). Futuremark PCMark 7 test measures day-to-day speed, and the Envy 6-1010us also showed up at the bottom with a score of 1,361, compared with 3,150 for the HP Folio 13 and 2,495 for the Sony VAIO E15. Even the "ultra-budget" Editors' Choice Acer Aspire 5349-2635 laptop, with its Celeron processor, beat the Envy 6-1010us on Handbrake, CineBench, and Photoshop. The Envy 6-1010us's battery life was decent, if unremarkable: 5 hours 35 minutes on MobileMark 2007. This is better than you see with non-ultrabook laptops like the Sony VAIO E15 (4:34) and Acer 5349-2635 (4:56), but far behind the HP Folio 13 (8:47). Although the HP Envy Sleekbook 6-1010us comes in an attractive package, its shortcomings make it a laptop we cannot really recommend. It has a low-resolution, low-quality screen. It proved slow on both our benchmark tests and on some day-to-day tasks. It's compact, but virtually any Intel-powered ultrabook is worth the extra $100-$200 dollars. The HP Folio 13-1020us remains a great ultrabook choice. Alternately, you can go for a traditional laptop like the Sony VAIO E15 or the sub-$800 Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814, both of which perform better on day-to-day tasks. If you want a really low-price system, check out the Acer Aspire 5349-2635 at Wal-Mart. Even made out of plastic, it's a better choice for a lot less money.
