Tempers Flare, Shelves Stripped in Central Jersey and Storm Arrives

Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.

FIRST PERSON | MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Starting Thursday, residents here began stocking up on food, batteries, snow shovels, and gasoline. Those lucky enough to have generators don't want to risk running out of gas, which may be as hard to find after this storm as it was after "Superstorm" Sandy.

Thousands of flights have been canceled at Newark and other New York-area airports. The parking lot at the local Stop & Shop was jammed, as people stripped shelves of milk, bread, and bottled water. Tempers frayed and a horn-blowing contest erupted over a parking space-- if the participants had not been senior citizens, fisticuffs would probably have taken place instead.

As of noon, the temperature is hovering around 30 degrees with a steady rain. The rain is expected to change to snow later this afternoon, with an accumulation of six to 12 inches forecast for central Jersey by the time the storm moves out.

Time Warner 4Q earnings up, raises dividend 11 pct

(AP) ? Time Warner Inc. said Wednesday that net income grew 51 percent in the last three months of 2012 even as revenue was largely unchanged. Rising fees from cable and satellite companies and higher ad revenue at the TV networks offset revenue declines at the movie studio and magazine businesses.

The company also announced a dividend increase and a new plan to buy back shares. Its stock jumped to its highest level in more than a decade.

The television networks business drove the quarter's performance as revenue there grew 5 percent, offsetting declines elsewhere. The Warner Bros. studio business had a weaker release lineup in the most recent quarter, though it managed to report an operating profit with an emphasis on higher-profit TV production. The Time Inc. magazine business, the smallest of the three, has announced layoffs to reflect reduced demand for print editions.

During a call with analysts, Time Warner executives credited original programs for much of its successes. First-run shows such as a revamped "Dallas" contributed to ratings improvements at Turner cable channels, while series such as "Girls" and "Game of Thrones" helped HBO sign up more subscribers. TV shows produced by the Warner Bros. studio also are finding renewed life on Netflix and other Internet video services.

The TV shows also helped the Warner Bros. business generate its second-highest annual profit ever even without new Harry Potter movies. The final one came out in the summer of 2011.

Time Warner said net income was $1.17 billion, or $1.21 a share, for the fourth quarter of 2012, up from $773 million, or 76 cents a share, a year earlier.

Adjusted for one-time items, earnings came to $1.17 per share. That beat the $1.10 per share that analysts surveyed by FactSet expected.

Revenue edged down to $8.16 billion from $8.19 billion a year ago. Analysts expected revenue of $8.22 billion.

Time Warner also said Wednesday that it is raising its quarterly dividend by 11 percent to 28.75 cents per share. It's payable March 15 to shareholders of record as of Feb. 28. Time Warner said it marks the fourth consecutive year of dividend increases in the double-digit percentage.

The company also said its board has authorized $4 billion in stock buybacks, which tend to increase the stock price for remaining shareholders. The new authorization replaces prior buyback plans, which resulted in $3.5 billion in buybacks from Jan. 1, 2012, to Feb. 1, 2013.

Time Warner's stock increased $2.05, or 4 percent, to close at $52.01 Wednesday after rising as high as $52.72 earlier, its highest level since 2002.

Time Warner is estimating $60 million in charges this year related to an announced layoff of about 500 employees at the magazine business, or about 6 percent of the division's global staff of 8,000. The company has been trying to cut costs to reflect decreases in revenue and the need to invest in more ways to deliver content on multiple platforms and devices.

In the fourth quarter, revenue at Time Warner's TV business grew 5 percent to $3.7 billion.

That business has gotten stronger in recent years as U.S. cable and satellite operators have been paying more to carry channels such as TNT, TBS and CNN on their lineups. The company also had more U.S. subscribers for the HBO premium channels and saw growth internationally across the TV business, despite unfavorable currency-exchange rates. Revenue from those distributor and subscription fees rose 7 percent.

Ad revenue at the networks increased 3 percent because of better rates, more NBA games shown on Time Warner channels and increased viewership at CNN during the presidential election season. Licensing and other content revenue fell 9 percent mostly because of a shutdown of TNT operations in Turkey.

At the Warner Bros. studio business, revenue fell 4 percent to $3.7 billion, largely because of a weaker lineup. The same quarter in 2011 had revenue from the home release of the final Harry Potter movie and the video game "Batman: Arkham City." Theatrical releases of the first "Hobbit" movie and "Argo" in most recent quarter weren't enough to offset those declines.

But operating income increased 29 percent to $552 million. Fewer releases mean fewer expenses to market the movies and make prints for theaters, though executives also credited the studio's TV production business, which is seeing increased demand from networks for first-run shows and reruns and from the likes of Netflix looking for more content for their services.

The Time Inc. magazine business saw revenue fall 7 percent to $967 million as ad revenue fell and the company no longer had money from a school fundraising business sold in early 2012. Subscription revenue was flat.

The company expects 2013 adjusted earnings to be up in the low double-digit percentage, an estimate that reflects the anticipated restructuring charges at Time Inc. It was $3.28 per share in 2013, meaning the projected range is $3.61 to $3.77. Analysts had expected earnings of $3.66 per share for 2013.

Washington, DC?- Yesterday, the?House Judiciary Committee?held its first substantive hearing of the 113th Congress on ?America?s Immigration System: Opportunities for Legal Immigration and Enforcement of Laws against Illegal Immigration.? While holding this hearing underscored the importance of immigration reform to our nation?s continued economic growth and future prosperity, for the most part the discussion failed to focus on some key issues that are vital to successful immigration reform.

?The solution to the tangled, unwieldy and dysfunctional immigration system is not a piecemeal approach, despite what several of the lawmakers and witnesses said yesterday. Instead, we need to create an immigration system that is balanced and inclusive,? said AILA President Laura Lichter. She continued, ?At the hearing, we heard about the importance of border security and need to make our borders more secure, despite the fact that there have been billions of dollars invested and that the benchmarks established by each of the Senate immigration reform bills of 2006, 2007 and 2010 have been essentially met or exceeded. With immigration enforcement occurring at unprecedented levels, our country must address the needs of the 11 million undocumented residents, their families, and employers.?

Ms. Lichter noted, ?Keeping all families strong and united is a core national value and interest, and we must continue our historic commitment to those values. We should not increase employment visas at the expense of reducing visas in family categories. Our immigration system must be flexible and capable of meeting the needs of American businesses and families.

?One important topic that didn?t seem to get much attention at the hearing was that we are currently denying basic due process to millions of people who live in the U.S. Long-time residents are subject to deportation even when they have strong ties to the community, pay taxes, and desperately want to become full-fledged members of our society. Many are eligible to apply for legal status, but because they lived in the U.S. for a period of time that was unauthorized they are now barred from fixing their status. Judges often have no ability to weigh the individual circumstances of the case while low-level officials often act as judge and jury, and the federal courts have been denied the power to review most agency decisions. Congress should restore fairness and flexibility to our system by authorizing immigration judges and officials to exercise discretion in considering the individual circumstances of each case,? she concluded.

AILA encourages lawmakers to commit to informed discussions that will shape a common sense immigration policy that helps to rebuild America?s economy, recognizes the contributions of immigrants, keeps families together, and strengthens America?s security.

New Technorati Report Says Most Marketers Expect Social Ad Spending To Go Up 40 Percent This Year

technorati report logoTechnorati has released a new Digital Influence Report, and the big theme (probably not surprising coming from a blog and social media ad network) is that most online marketing dollars aren't being directed to the "blogs and influencers" where they could have the greatest effect. At the same, social ad spending is expected to increase significantly this year. The company previously released annual State of the Blogosphere reports, but starting this year it's expanding the report's scope to include social media ? hence the change in name. The company says that it surveyed 1,200 consumers, 150 brand marketers, and 6,000 influencers. (I sent Technorati CEO Shani Higgins an email asking how those influencers were identified, and she said that surveys were sent out to the company's index of 2.5 million influencers, Technorati waited for 6,000 completed responses, and then it checked them to "make sure we get top influencers participating and a wide sample set.")

Middleton high schoolers know about 'iPhone' scams; simply delete ...

February 4, 2013 ? 1:36 pm

By Robb Hicken/BBB?s chief storyteller

Speaking with students at Middleton High School last week as part of a ?Know Your Options? session, I found out just what they thought about smartphones.

I was not surprised to see that the upper classes were tuned into staying in touch by smartphone. Fewer of the younger students ? freshmen and sophomores ? owned the devices.

Of the upper classmen, nearly half already had a smartphone. And, of those who had a phone, none reported falling for the ?you?ve won a gift card? text scam. Their response was short and simple: Don?t know who it is? Delete.

The students said the texts they receive the most are: You?ve won an iPhone 5 or a $1,000 Walmart prize.

Smart students because most knew what lay in store should they click the link for the alleged prize. Clicking the link may download a harmful virus to their mobile device.

It?s important to remember that a smart phone is basically a hand-held computer, and is susceptible to viruses, malware or spyware just like a laptop or a desktop computer.? In addition, most students understood that by the time they were in college they would be using smartphones or a tablet for multiple tasks ? from paying bills to writing class papers.

I passed along ?these tips:

  • Never reply to an email that is asking you for personal information. Even if the email appears to be from a trusted source, this may be a phishing attack, where someone is trying to illegitimately obtain your personal or financial information. Delete the email immediately.
  • Do not click on any links from sources that you are unfamiliar with. This may be a phishing attack, where someone is trying to redirect you to a website that may automatically trigger malicious code and infect your computer. If you really want to check out a link sent to you by email, research the company or individual first to confirm they are trustworthy. If so, then manually retype the link into a secure web browser.
  • Keep anti-spyware, anti-virus and anti-spam software up to date. While you are ultimately responsible for keeping personal and financial information private, these technologies are designed to help keep phishing attacks to a minimum.
  • Never give personal information over the phone. Take the time to verify what the caller is claiming by visiting BBB.org to look up the organization they are representing.
  • A true sweepstakes will not make its winner pay fees. Many scams involve mailing or wiring a portion of the prize back for fees or taxes. Legitimate prizes do not come with processing fees and taxes are paid directly to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after winnings are collected.

More often, text messages like these ? including claims you have won merchandise or gift cards from popular stores and brands ? are phishing scams. Clicking the link leads you to a form that asks you to provide your personal information so in order to claim your prize. The scammers either use that information to open fraudulent accounts in your name or sell it to others.

(AP) ? A New York City woman who went missing while vacationing alone in Istanbul was found dead on Saturday, and police detained nine people for questioning in connection with the case, Turkey's state-run news agency said.

Sarai Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, was last heard from on Jan. 21, the day she was to fly home. Her disappearance attracted a lot of interest in Turkey, where the disappearance of tourists is rare, and Istanbul police had set up a special unit to find her.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said the body of a woman was discovered Saturday evening near the remnants of ancient city walls and that police later identified it as Sierra's.

The agency did not say what caused her death. But the private NTV television reported that she was stabbed to death, while a private news agency, Dogan, said she had a head wound, suggesting she may have been hit with an object.

Police reached by The Associated Press refused to comment on the case.

Sierra, whose children are 9 and 11, had left for Istanbul on Jan. 7 to explore her photography hobby and made a side trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Munich, Germany. She had originally planned to travel with a friend, but ended up traveling alone when her friend canceled.

She was in regular contact with friends and relatives and was last in touch with her family on Jan. 21, the day she was due back in New York. She told them she would visit Galata Bridge, which spans Istanbul's Golden Horn waterway, to take photos.

The body was found near the bridge and a major road that runs alongside the sea of?Marmara. Here tourists often photograph dozens of tankers waiting to access the Bosporus strait.

On Saturday, police stopped traffic there as forensic police inspected the area.

Anadolu suggested Sierra may have been killed at another location and that her body may have been brought to the site to be hidden there.

At least nine people were detained for questioning in Istanbul, and a police official at the site told journalists that two of them are women. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters about the case.

It was not clear if a Turkish man Sierra had exchanged emails with during her stay in Istanbul was among the nine detainees. He was detained for questioning Friday, then released. Turkish news reports said Sierra had arranged to meet the man on Galata Bridge, but he reportedly told police the meeting never took place.

Sierra's husband, Steven, and her brother, David Jimenez, traveled to Istanbul to help search for her. Sierra's mother, Betzaida Jimenez, said on Saturday that she couldn't talk about the case when reached in New York.

Shortly after Sierra was reported missing, Turkey set up a special police unit which scanned hours of security camera footage in downtown Istanbul in search of clues. A Turkish missing persons association joined the search, handing out flyers with photos of Sierra and urging anyone with information to call police.

While break-ins and petty thievery are common in Istanbul, the vast and crowded city is?considered relatively safe compared to other?major?urban centers. Sierra's death was unlikely to have a significant impact on tourism, a large component of the?Turkish economy.

In 2008, an Italian artist, Pippa Bacca, was raped and killed while hitchhiking to Israel wearing a wedding dress to plead for peace. Her naked body was found in a forest in northwest Turkey. A Turkish man was sentenced to life in prison for the attack. ?
