Working with a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness ? Lesson 3

Today I had my 3rd session with a personal trainer at my local 24 Hour Fitness. I probably scheduled these too close together since this is just the second day after my previous session. The reason I am saying this is that your body needs to balance out and get some rest after doing certain exercises. As an example after a long run you would not go out and do another long run right away, you would either do some cross-training or do a shorter, slower run. In my sessions (1, 2) with the personal trainer we have been concentrating on the core and back and some other muscle groups and I did not have enough time for cross-training or rest in between. During my session today my arms finally turned into ?Jello? because we were doing just exercises that also involved the arms ? a lot.

So, but this was good because it shows me where I need to put more effort in. Goal of these 3 training sessions for me was to discover new exercises that would help me to improve my overall fitness and turn me into a better runner. The exercises showed where I am weak. The exercises showed me muscles I did not know I actually had.

So, session #3 included some repeat workouts from the last 2 sessions and then a whole new set of exercises. Tessa also showed me a few of the other machines and how to use them in a way that is safe and actually provides value to me.? As an example I did several exercises using a FreeMotion cable machine. I also used an ?Assisted Pull-Up Exercise Machine? which I found really interesting to work with. You can Google Search for both of these machines to see how exactly they work. In addition to these machines Tessa had me use a gymnastics ball and some dumbbells. She showed me a couple of different ways to get a full-body workout in. As an example I was leaning against the ball and a wall and then did use the dumbbells, too. Doing squats first and then from a standing position doing curls definitely worked my entire body.

So, now that I have used my 3 free personal trainer sessions I will continue on my own. I know this is not enough to be really doing things right, but I want to build up some more strength and then I might purchase another 3-set of personal trainer sessions to further advance. I have been a runner for years and I have done some exercising for core and back, but as mentioned in previous postings, I have not done enough ? mainly because I just did not know better. I learned a lot from the 3 sessions with a personal trainer at 24 Hour Fitness and I have to say, I should have done this much earlier, but, better late than never I guess. I will continue with my training ? combining the new exercises with some running sessions and then in a week to 10 days head out for a longer run and see how the difference is.
